Believe it or not, the MLBs All-Star weekend is less than two weeks away. Maybe youve been busy getting back to life, or maybe youve been distracted by baseballs Controversy Du Jour, which just so happens to be Sticky Substances. In mid-June, the MLB officially began in-game checks on pitchers for long-accepted substances used to help apply spin to the baseball and avoid career-altering injury in doing so. The midseason 180 has generated plenty of backlash from pitchers and fans alike, and has led to countless surprisingly creepy interruptions to your regularly scheduled baseball programming.

But we have spectacular news, anti-anti-stickies: This week the MLB made the HUGE announcement that it will take a ONE-NIGHT ONLY break from foreign-substance checks for the comprehensively meaningless All-Star Game. Wow. What can we say. We are truly blessed to be a part of such a wonderful sport run so wisely by the great and all-knowing Mr. Robert Manfred. Glory be!

Industrial-grade sarcasm aside, it really makes you wonder what the thought processif there is oneis here. At the height of the steroid era, the MLB didnt make the All-Star Game free HGH night. During the juiced ball era, they didnt give the Home Run Derby participants Superballs to hit. When it comes to watching Jacob DeGrom throw exactly two-thirds of an inning of consequenceless baseball, however, theyre relaxing their own hastily established rules in the name of, um, more strikeouts?

The Extremely Selective Outrage Around Baseball Cheating – New York Magazine

Last week, I was at Citi Field watching the Major League debut of Tylor Megill, a Mets non-prospect called up to the bigs to make a spot start because of the cavalcade of injuries afflicting the team (and MLB in general) this season. Megill pitched well not great, but good enough for the Mets to win and when manager Luis Rojas came to yank him from the game, he was met with appreciative and sustained applause from the Citi Field faithful. But then, suddenly, out of nowhere, the crowd began to boo lustily. Why? Because, as Megill left the field, two umpires stopped him and did the now-requisite checking of his hat and belt for foreign substances. Ever since June 21, when the MLB instituted its crackdown on sticky stuff the foreign substances that pitchers have used to gain an upper hand against hitters this has become a nightly occurrence at every ballpark in America. Home team pitcher leaves the field, umpires check him, fans boo the umpires. Its actually kind of fun.

I found the Megill episode particularly hilarious, considering his MLB debut came just two days after the new rules went into place; I cant imagine a dumber decision than a rookie putting Spider Tack on his hat for his debut, the very week rules were introduced to stop him from doing so. But I wonder what would have happened if the umps had found something on Megill. What if they cold busted him right there, ejecting him from the game and assuring hed be known as the guy nailed for using banned substances in his first-ever MLB game? I bet fans would have still booed the umps. I bet they would have booed them louder.

The new MLB initiative has led to a fresh round of recriminations for cheating players, with the league saying its trying to clean up the game and pitchers arguing its unfair to start banning things, midseason, that have been legal (or at least accepted) throughout the entirety of baseball history. (One pitcher, the Rays Tyler Glasnow, explicitly blamed the new rules for his arm injury.) Theres a whole debate to be had about the efficacy of the new rules; whether theyre less about cheating and more about trying to assign blame for a strikeout-heavy gameplay that many believe has ossified into something dull and repetitive;and whether its necessarily the best idea to antagonize half the players in the league just a few months before a potentially apocalyptic labor struggle. But I suspect the whole idea of cheating is a red herring here. Because I dont think fans care about cheating much at all.

Oh, sure, they claim they do. Baseballs last big scandal revolved around the Houston Astros and their infamous banging scheme, which allegedly helped them steal signs from opposing teams. Im on record as finding that whole thing rather silly and theres very little evidence that it even provided the Astros much of an advantage but it rocked the sport two years ago, and fans will be booing the Astros off the field for the next decade because of it. But its worth noting that Astros fans long ago moved on. The same is true of the Patriots SpyGate scandal in the NFL, or the Cardinals hacking scandal in MLB, or, uh, the Patriots Deflategate scandal. Fans of those teams have hardly turned on their franchises; they have circled the wagons to protect them. But fans in Boston, Houston, and St. Louis arent inherently less moral than anyone else, and its not like theyre predisposed to embrace cheaters however you want to define such a broad term any more or less. They just love their teams. Maybe the cheating troubles them; maybe they do care a little. But no matter what, they care about their team more. The act of winning is more important than how you get there.

The most illustrative example of this is MLBs steroid era. The collective wisdom is that when we look back at Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and Manny Ramirez (who actually retired rather than face punishment for his second positive PED test), we see villains. But those players fan bases dont. Bonds is still beloved in San Francisco, McGwire was recently elected to the Cardinals Hall of Fame, and there isnt a fan in Boston who doesnt get a smile on their face when Mannys name comes up. But its not just local fan bases. Fans often decided how angry they were about a players supposed cheating based on how much they liked the player in the first place. Alex Rodriguez was awkward, unpopular, and overpaid, so when he got caught up in the Biogenesis scandal, Yankees fans couldnt throw him overboard fast enough. But Andy Pettitte, who (unlike A-Rod or Bonds) actually admitted to his HGH usage, was quickly forgiven, with his I just tried it that once defense accepted at face value. Why? Because fans like Andy Pettitte. He may have been a cheater, but he was their cheater. Other examples in this vein include David Ortiz, Bartolo Colon, and Nelson Cruz; NFL examples include Julian Edelman, Will Fuller, and Mark Sanchez, who will be forever known more for his butt fumble than his 2018 PED suspension.

This is not to excuse cheating, though I will note that bending the rules has been an integral part of sports since there were sports, and the idea of some sort of level playing field has always been an illusion and a fallacy. (And its hardly something limited to professional leagues. I can confirm firsthand that cheating is extremely common in Little League baseball; playing by the rules is a great way to look, to other coaches and parents, like a goddamned sucker.) Its just that our standards for what counts as cheating, and how much moral outrage we gin up about it, are forever shifting. The only thing thats consistent is that we want our own teams to win. Wed rather them not cheat. But if theyre going to cheat, wed rather not know about it. Just dont get caught. As long as you win.

Do you think Yankees fans are really outraged over the moral turpitude of Gerrit Cole? The ace starter, who is signed to a contract that will pay him $36 million a year through the 2028 season, was specifically fingered as a sticky stuff suspect earlier this month. You may remember his response when asked about it. It was not reassuring.

Cole made his first start last Tuesday since MLB put in the ban on foreign substances, and while he was effective against a poor Kansas City team, it was obvious that his stuff, and his spin rate, was way down. He was quite clearly not the same pitcher.

In his next start, Sunday against the Red Sox, Cole got shelled, giving up five runs in five innings and allowing three homers. His pitches had less bite and movement than in any start over the last several years. Is he a different pitcher in an age of banned substances? Did the Yankees sign him for the next decade without considering that foreign substances were powering his rise?

It sure seems that way. But how do you feel about that? If you hate the Yankees, this is surely hilarious to you: Serves them right. But if youre a Yankees fan dont you wish he was still using the stuff? Wouldnt you like him to figure out a way to start again? Be honest.

Sports fans claim to dislike cheating. What they really mean is that they dislike when the other team does it. When their favorite player is the offender? Well, theyd rather just not hear about that. This isnt meant to be an indictment of sports fans. This well, this makes them just like everybody else.

Sara Hurvitz, MD: Hello, Im Dr Sara Hurvitz, professor of medicine at the University of California Los Angeles, Johnson Comprehensive Cancer Center. Im going to be discussing today the AMEERA-5 clinical trial which is a randomized double-blind phase 3 clinical trial evaluating amcenestrant with palbociclib vs letrozole plus palbociclib for previously untreated hormone receptor-positive HER2-negative [human epidermal growth factor receptor 2] advanced breast cancer.

When you look at the scope of breast cancer and the different subtypes of breast cancer, it is notable that hormone receptor-positive breast cancer comprises the largest proportion of all cancers diagnosed. Hormone receptor-positive breast cancer represents about two-thirds to three-fourths of all breast cancers diagnosed. In terms of stage of disease, most patients in the Western world [receive a diagnosis at] stage I, II, or III breast cancer, only about 10% of patients at their initial diagnosis are diagnosed with advanced disease, meaning incurable stage IV metastatic breast cancer.

However, approximately 90% of patients who are diagnosed with early-stage disease, they are at risk for the rest of their life of being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer or stage IV breast cancer. The risk of developing advanced stage disease goes up by the stage at which a patient is diagnosed. If a patient [received a diagnosis of] stage I breast cancer, she has a lower risk of developing advanced disease than somebody who is diagnosed, for example, with stage III breast cancer.

The prognosis of breast cancer, just focusing on stage IV breast cancer, is evolving over time as we have the availability of new agents come up. We do know, from some recent studies that are registry clinical trials and follow how long patients are living who are diagnosed with advanced disease, that the median overall survival is roughly on the order of 40 months or so for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, HER2-negative advanced breast cancer. These data come from a French registry trial called ESME-MBC in which all women diagnosed starting around 2008 with metastatic breast cancer with subtype known were followed and assessed for median overall. Although we now have cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitors available for the treatment of this disease, the median overall survival over this time course has not increased. Its possible that in the future we will see the median overall survival improve as more time has passed and the data mature.

"Magnesium comes in various formulations that can be beneficial in different ways. Magnesium citrate differs from the other chelated forms, such as magnesium bisglycinate and magnesium threonate, which are readily absorbed and work intracellularly," explains Ivanir. "Magnesium bisglycinate, in particular, can help with relaxation, sleep, and anxiety reduction. Therefore, it can be beneficial to take this form of magnesium at night before bedtime," she says, citing this study. You can also get magnesium from a variety of food sources like bananas, dark leafy greens, nuts, avocados, and beans.

Echoing Ivanir, Roxie M. Calloway, MS, RD says "[magnesium] is a natural relaxant and helps with sleep quality. Magnesium can also help relieve stress, as it can inhibit cortisol production and potentially lower blood pressure. She adds that men should have around 300 mg and women around 200 mg per day, though some people may opt to take more. "Magnesium has a lot of other health benefits as well. Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a role in more than 300 different enzyme systems in the body. It helps the body use calcium and oxygen properly, and it helps build healthy bones and teeth," she further notes.

"Passionflower has been used in alternative medicine for insomnia; yet, recent research has shown that passionflower may in fact impact your sleep quantity and quality. Sleep quantity refers to the total time you've spent sleeping, and sleep quality refers to how well you've slept," says Kim Rose, RDN, CDCES, CNSC, LD. "In order to achieve a good night's rest, the perfect balance of sleep quantity and quality must be met. A 2017 animal study showed that passionflower decreased wakefulness and showed a significant increase in the total time spent sleeping. As it related to sleep quality, one human study showed that passionflower tea was helpful. Though these studies are small, and more human research is needed before definitive claims can be made, passionflower may hold promising results for capping off your night," she elaborates.

This supplement may be a boon if you're looking for better sleep. "L-theanine is an amino acid mostly found in the green tea plant. A small 2016 study showed that L-theanine may have anti-stress benefits," explains Rose. "This is important because stress may also impact our sleep. Another study conducted in China showed that negative types of stress may promote sleep disturbance and disrupt overall sleep quality. For as much stress as modern-day society gives, L-theanine seems to be a smart choice."

Wrapping up for the night? If you're all about gym life, it might be a good idea to take a protein supplement before you hit the hay. "For active individuals, it can be beneficial to take a slowly digested protein supplement before bed. When utilized over a period of time in conjunction with strength training, pre-sleep protein can help increase muscle mass and strength, promote recovery, and improve performance," says Ivanir, referencing this research. "This may be due in part to the overnight spike in growth hormone, which helps synthesize muscle mass."

Calloway zooms in on casein protein (from eggs) as the best type: "It's a good idea to consume casein protein before bedtime to promote muscle growth due to its slow digestion. Casein, unlike whey, is a very thick protein that breaks down slowly in the stomach and helps give your muscles nutrients (while promoting growth hormone secretion) while you're asleep," says Calloway. "It's a complete protein with all essential amino acids and has been shown to increase lean muscle mass. When this protein is consumed just before going to bed, it helps promote muscle protein synthesis while allowing your muscles to recover from workouts overnight."

It may very well be time to befriend this Ayurvedic herb with a large slew of applications.

"It is specifically known to produce a calming effect, which may be beneficial to sleep. While most studies on ashwagandha have been done on animals, one notable human study demonstrated that ashwagandha may very well improve sleep," says Rose. "In order to sleep well, you have to have a sense of calm. In this particular study, it was shown that ashwagandha did just that and improved sleep quality while decreasing the amount of time it takes to go from being fully awake to sleeping."

Hopping aboard the CBD train may have a positive impact on your sleep. "One sleep-promoting supplement I would recommend is cannabidiol or CBD. CBD, one of the main cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, interacts with the endocannabinoid system which helps regulate many processes in the body," says Ivanir. "While difficulty sleeping may be due to a variety of reasons, if it is caused by factors such as anxiety CBD may be beneficial. Research shows that CBD can have a calming effect, which can help reduce stress and improve sleep quality. Furthermore, if chronic pain is interrupting sleep, CBD has also been shown to help relieve pain and thereby aid in sleep. CBD may also interact with receptors in the brain that govern sleep-wake cycles, promoting sleep directly," she continues.

Jason Giambi was born in West Covina, California, and attended South Hills High School. He has a brother, Jeremy Giambi, who also played in MLB.

Jason Giambi played college baseball at California State University at Long Beach before being drafted as a second-round pick by the Oakland Athletics in 1992.

Giambi played his first MLB game in 1995 against the Texas Rangers. After that, he spent the first seven years of his career in the Bay Area and put up some monster numbers for Oakland.

In 2000, Giambi was named the American League MVP after hitting 44 home runs with 137 RBIs. That year, Giambino made his first All-Star Game while leading the league in walks and on-base percentage.

After another dominant campaign in 2001, and a second-consecutive playoff defeat at the hands of the Yankees, Giambi left the small-market team in Oakland. He was a hot commodity as a free agent, having just led the league in slugging percentage.

So the New York Yankees signed Giambi to spend the next seven seasons at first base and as a designated hitter in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium under manager Joe Torre.

Giambi got off to a hot start in pinstripes, stringing together back-to-back 41-home run seasons and eclipsing the 100-RBI threshold.

In 2003, Giambi logged a .250 batting average and launched 41 bombs to help lead the Yankees to the World Series. The team fell short of its goal, unfortunately, in a tough loss to the Florida Marlins.

Giambi left the Yankees in 2008 as a 37-year-old and returned to the Athletics. He was cut midway through the 2009 season and subsequently signed with the Colorado Rockies.

He played for the Rockies from 2009-12 before finishing his career with the Cleveland Indians.

Giambi retired after the 2014 season as a five-time All-Star, one-time AL MVP, and two-time Silver Slugger. He featured in 2,260 regular-season games and 45 postseason games throughout his career.

While Jason Giambis career was filled with terrific seasons and many home runs, there was also quite a bit of controversy surrounding the baseball player.

Giambi was one of the MLB players at the forefront of the BALCO Scandal, which outed players who had proven to be using illegal human growth hormones and other performance-enhancing drugs.

Giambi came clean and admitted to using banned substances at a 2003 grand jury hearing. Among various other transcripts, that testimony was obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle and released to the public.

In 2007, Giambi issued an apology for his involvement and participation in the PED scandal. While he was initially scrutinized heavily for his actions, he found that issuing a heartfelt apology resulted in him earning forgiveness from those across the league.

Giambi, among others like Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, and Mark McGwire, all came under intense scrutiny for their use of HGH throughout their careers, and its played a significant factor in keeping some star players out of the Hall of Fame.

These days, Jason Giambi resides in Henderson, Nevada near Las Vegas with his wife Kristian. The couple has three children together: two daughters and a son named Tristan.

Tristan Giambi has started Little League, and Jason told MLB.coms Alfred Santasiere III how he became the coach of his sons team. While Giambi expressed his interest in returning to baseball in a coaching role, it seems his top priority as of now is his family.

The last weve heard from Giambi was his response to the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal, to which he stated that the Astros antics were similar to PED use and that teams will always be seeking out ways to gain a competitive advantage.
